Belle Tire notifies nearly 30,000 people after June 2024 network intrusion

Belle Tire Distributors, a Michigan based tire and automotive service retailer, reported that an intrusion into its computer systems exposed the personal information of roughly 29,330 people.

The company said it detected unauthorized activity on its network on 11 June 2024. It engaged a third party cybersecurity team to investigate and stop the access, and notified law enforcement. Belle Tire said it did not learn which specific records had been affected until 11 September 2024.

According to the notification, an intruder accessed and may have copied files containing names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers. Belle Tire began mailing letters to affected individuals on 31 October 2024 and filed a breach notice with the Maine attorney general in early November 2024, which recorded 29,330 people affected nationwide, four of them Maine residents.

Those notified were offered 24 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks coverage, including credit monitoring, fraud detection and identity restoration support. Plaintiffs' firms announced investigations within days of the letters going out, and the incident later produced consolidated class action litigation against the company. Belle Tire denied wrongdoing while agreeing to a settlement that remained subject to court approval.
