Erie Insurance confirms cyberattack behind multi-week outage

Erie Insurance said its information security team identified unusual network activity on Saturday, June 7, 2025. The Pennsylvania based insurer, which underwrites roughly six million active policies through about 14,000 agents, later confirmed the activity was a cyberattack.

The company took systems offline as a containment measure, producing days of outages across its customer portal and business platforms. Policyholders reported being unable to log in, file claims or obtain routine paperwork. Erie said it was working to restore service and directed customers with urgent needs to their local agents or its claims phone line.

Erie Indemnity Company, which manages the insurer, disclosed the event in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, saying it had notified law enforcement and engaged outside cybersecurity specialists for a forensic review. It stated that the full scope, nature and ultimate impact on the company were not yet known.

Erie also warned customers about follow-on fraud, saying it would not contact them by phone or email seeking payment during the outage and advising them not to click links from unknown sources or share personal details in response to unsolicited calls and emails. The company did not say whether ransomware was used or whether policyholder data had been taken, and it reconnected business systems in stages over the weeks that followed.
