International Game Technology takes systems offline after cyberattack

International Game Technology, the London headquartered supplier of slot machines, lottery systems and sports betting technology, disclosed a cybersecurity incident that disrupted parts of its internal network in November 2024.

The company said it became aware on 17 November 2024 that an unauthorized third party had gained access to certain of its systems, and that the intrusion caused disruptions across portions of its internal information technology systems and applications. IGT reported the incident to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in a filing dated 19 November 2024.

IGT activated its cybersecurity incident response plan and launched an investigation with the support of external advisers to assess and remediate the unauthorized activity. It also proactively took certain systems offline as a protective measure. The company put business continuity workarounds in place so that customer service could continue while restoration work went on, and said it had kept customers and stakeholders informed throughout.

IGT said its assessment of the financial impact was continuing and that it had not established whether the event was material. No ransomware group claimed responsibility in the days after the disclosure, although SecurityWeek noted that taking systems offline is a typical response to a ransomware attack. IGT employs more than 11,000 people worldwide and reported roughly $1.9 billion in revenue over the first nine months of 2024.
