Jamaica's Ministry of National Security confirmed cyberattack on JamaicaEye website

Jamaica's Ministry of National Security confirmed on June 11, 2023 that the website for JamaicaEye, the country's national closed-circuit television surveillance program, had been hit by a cyber incident that disrupted access to the site.
JamaicaEye was launched in 2018 under the National Closed-Circuit Television Surveillance Programme. Alongside state-owned cameras, citizens and business owners with cameras trained on public spaces can volunteer their feeds into the national system.
The compromise was flagged the previous day by a local cybersecurity practitioner, who reported that attackers had left a web shell on the site. The ministry said the website was not connected in any way to the central infrastructure of the surveillance system, and that no video footage or recorded evidence captured by JamaicaEye cameras had been compromised.
The ministry said it was unable to confirm whether data belonging to people who had registered an interest in partnering with JamaicaEye had been exfiltrated. It did not say how many registrants were on file.
A joint team drawn from the ministry, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency was assessing the extent of the breach. No group publicly claimed responsibility in the reporting at the time.
