Ransomware attack on Peter Green Chilled disrupts UK supermarket food supplies

Peter Green Chilled, a Somerset based distributor of temperature controlled food, was hit by ransomware in mid May 2025. Both The Register and The Record reported that the attack struck on Wednesday 14 May and that the company emailed customers the following day.

The company moved chilled goods on behalf of food producers supplying major UK grocers, so the disruption rippled outward. The Record named Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's among the chains served indirectly through smaller producers, while The Register also listed Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, the Co-op and Marks and Spencer among the distributor's customers.

Managing director Tom Binks said the transport side of the business was still operating, but the systems used to take and process orders were down and no new orders were being accepted. Phone lines rejected inbound calls and the company's email accepted messages only from an approved sender list, leaving producers unable to reach it or to find out what had happened.

The commercial impact fell largely on the small suppliers whose stock was sitting in the distributor's warehouses. The founder of The Black Farmer said he had around ten pallets of meat products in the system and estimated potential losses near 100,000 pounds for the week, with produce likely to spoil if it did not reach retailers in time. Peter Green Chilled declined to detail the effect on its IT systems, and no group publicly claimed responsibility.
