An investigation is underway after real estate giant Marcus & Millichap suffered a ransomware attack. The attack is suspected to have been performed by the BlackMatter ransomware group as they posted authentic looking sample files on their dark web leak site.
In a recent filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Marcus & Millichap reported they “immediately engaged cybersecurity experts to secure and restore all systems and was able to do so with no material disruption to (its) business.” The firm also stated that there is no evidence suggesting a data breach, nor was any client data compromised.
Further details of the attack and whether a ransom was paid has yet to be announced. For now, the company is directing all questions to their initial statement within the SEC filings by pointing out their prompt reaction time leading to the restoration of all their essential systems. More details are expected to be released as the formal investigation continues.
