Smiths Group discloses unauthorized access to its systems

Smiths Group, the London listed engineering conglomerate, told the London Stock Exchange on January 28, 2025 that it was managing a cyber security incident involving unauthorized access to company systems.

In its regulatory notice the company said it had rapidly isolated the affected systems and activated business continuity plans once the unauthorized activity was identified. It added that it was working with external cyber security experts to recover the affected systems, determine any wider impact on the business, and meet its regulatory obligations.

The statement was brief and left most questions open. Smiths did not say when the intrusion began or was detected, which systems or business units were involved, whether ransomware was used, or whether any company or customer data had been taken. A company spokesperson declined to answer questions from TechCrunch, saying updates would follow when appropriate.

Smiths Group employs more than 15,000 people across roughly 50 countries and reported revenue of about 3.1 billion pounds in its most recent financial year. Its divisions supply the energy, aerospace, defense and security markets, including airport screening equipment. As of the reporting date no threat group had claimed the intrusion and the company had not indicated whether the incident would have a material effect on its operations.
